Klee's Castles, 2nd grade

Paul Klee's "Castle and Sun" was our jumping off piece for this lesson - thanks to this blog, arteascuola, for the idea (and several others I pinned from you)! Castles were great subjects to be drawn on book pages, since so many stories are set around a castle. I have been collecting damaged books for upcycling, and the second graders were excited to use Harry Potter pages for this lesson.
Students made 3 compositional choices: page layout, type of balance (symmetrical or asymmetrical) and warm or cool color scheme. We finished off the designs with a geometric pattern border and a pop of contrasting color.

  3. Excellent - love the borders shapes echoing the castle colors on a complementary color mount. It really sets everything off brilliantly! You have re-inspired me to do a project on old book pages .... I'm going to start collecting!

  5. I love how you introduced the children to Paul Klee. What an interesting and fun way to use mixed media as well as reinforce the use of shape.
